I played Isabella Bird in a little known play called 'Dear Desperado' which was based on her time in the Rocky Mountains and speculated on her relationship with a man called Rocky Mountain Jim. It was performed at Mull Little Theatre, which was, at that time the smallest professional theatre in the world. Isabella Bird opened the clock tower in Tobermory, which is the capital of the Scottish Hebridean Island of Mull. What struck me at the time was, not only was she an intrepid traveller but she did it all in full Victoria garb, including corsets!!!

I’m surprised no one mentioned George Megan who walked from tiera del Diego to the Artic circle. Read his story in The Longest Walk
