Ri Sol-ju's life is nothing like that of any other first lady in the world. Very little is known about her, which makes the facts you are going to learn today even more intriguing.
#1 She used to have another name, but no one knows what it was
According to a North Korean law, Ri Sol-ju had to change her entire name after getting married to the supreme leader of the country. There are a lot of speculations about that, but no one can tell for sure what Ri Sol-ju's birth name was. Learn more about the bizarre North Korean laws and traditions.
#2 The information about her past is kept secret
Kim Jong-un's wife supposedly comes from a rich family. There is a popular belief that Ri Sol-ju's father was a professor, and her mother was a doctor. Her reported year of birth has ranged between 1985 and 1989. Some say that Ri studied in China majoring in vocal music, but the North Korean government is trying to erase her past as an entertainer now.
#3 She rarely appears in public
The North Koreans see their first lady regularly, but not often. Usually it happens only on very special occasions - Ri always accompanies her husband while paying homage to the deceased leaders of the country.
#4 Ri Sol-ju is not allowed to be seen while pregnant
A few times Ri had been gone out of sight for several months, and the public was worried that something bad had happened to her. Anyway, she had always returned, which more than likely means she was pregnant.
#5 Nothing is known about her children
As of 2019, Ri possibly has 3 children. She gave birth to the first one in 2010, after one year of marriage. According to the former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman, who visited North Korea in 2013, she gave birth to another child that year. In 2017, South Korean intelligence officials reported that Ri gave birth to a third child of unknown gender. Nobody knows for sure how many children Ri and Kim Jong-un actually have.
#6 Being hidden almost all of the time, she managed to become a true style icon
Over the years of Kim Jong-un's rule, Ri Sol-ju's style has changed. She began wearing pretty Western brands, which was highly regarded and discussed by the public. Ri Sol-ju also became the only first lady of North Korea to have her hair cut.
#7 When Ri appears in pictures with her husband, she usually stands in the background
When Kim Jong-un and his wife travel together and get caught by the cameras, Ri usually tries to hide - it's really hard to find any pictures of her own. Many people believe she is just following the instructions.
#8 She has to give birth to at least one boy
Because of North Korea's hereditary system, Kim Jong-un's son is to become the next leader of the country. Having only daughters is unacceptable, so Ri Sol-ju must produce at least one suitable heir.
