#1 The Book “Green Eggs and Ham” is a Result of a Bet

The book originated from a bet with a friend. He said that Dr. Seuss could not write a book with 50 different words or less. So, the book “Green Eggs and Ham” was born.

#3 Dr. Seuss didn’t have Biological Children

Dr. Seuss never had biological children. His first wife was unable to bear kids and his second already has two children from a previous marriage. Ironically enough, he was actually wary of little ones due to their unpredictable nature.

In fact, he had a closet full of funny hats. He used them when he had trouble writing to help the words flow.

1957 was a big year for Dr. Seuss’s characters. Two of his well-known characters, “The Cat in the Hat” and the Grinch, were introduced in the same year, in 1957.

#6 Dr. Seuss Named a Major Character after his Editor’s Son

The book “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” was Dr. Seuss’s debut. Editor Mike McClintock accepted the manuscript after numerous rejections from other publishers. Dr. Seuss named the book’s main character after the editor’s son, Marco, to show his gratitude.

#7 Dr. Seuss had a Successful Advertising Career

His pen name was MISPROUNCED by almost everyone. "Seuss" rhymes with "Choice" or "Voice." And he was a very successful political cartoonist in the '30s and '40s. But he will ALWAYS be remembered for the marvelous books and characters that were an important part of our childhood memories, cherished by multiple generations.

And, in case you never knew this, his first book came out in 1939 and was a story for adults entitled: “The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History's Barest Family”. The illustrations in this book are in true Dr Seuss style, and we’re wonderfully, tastefully “naughty”! It was a huge failure though😞.

My Great Aunt Barbie, was her secretary for several years during the 1950s She's now 99 and owns many original drawings sign by Dr. Seuss, as well as six first copies of his books. Sing and dedication from him included.

They were never very popular in England which is a shame. I discovered them when my second child was young, as an American relation bought them for her cousin. They are great books to read to children you can have so much fun with them.
